Project Description
Sited at the edge of the existing academic quadrangle, the Campus Chapel at Walsh University embodies the mission of the founding Brothers of Christian Education. The building is the center piece of a Campus Master Plan which includes an extension of the existing quad, and future buildings to house administration and educational functions.
Programmatic elements include a worship space on the upper level to seat 350, with an assortment of lecture rooms and faculty offices on the lower level that support the Theology department.
University leaders requested a timeless building that would stand for generations and speak of the institutions goals and ideals. Rough and smooth cut limestone was chosen for its beauty and longevity. Transitions between the smooth and rough stone were done in cast concrete, giving the building a water table that helps tie the structure to its sloping site. The stone work acts as a base for the Douglas Fir roof structure that is expressed throughout the building. Careful articulation of stone, timber, glass and mosaic all work together to create a unified ensemble of materials that are viewed "in the round" on this campus quadrangle.
