Project Description
Tragically in 1999, twelve students lost their lives and dozens more were injured erecting a traditional homecoming bonfire. This memorial was commissioned to reflect the spirit and dedication of the victims.
Grey and black Chinese granite was the primary medium. Twelve portals were erected. Some individual stones weighed 25,000 to 30,000 pounds. 26 pieces of granite connect the portals. This stone is set on a perfect radius at the perimeter of their intended bonfire. The walk path is 1/4-mile granite timeline accented with two black markers - one when we lost President Kennedy, the other at the 1999 student tragedy.
