Project Description
The new McKinney Veteran’s Memorial project occupies a half-acre site which combines aggregate-covered walks, seating benches, trees, and a substantial granite memorial monument. As such it provides a well-suited setting for remembering the sacrifices made by Collin County servicemen and women, as well as others who have served in the U.S. armed forces.
The Wall of Honor is the feature element on the Veteran’s Memorial site. Here Mesabi Black granite entirely clads the exposed surfaces. The inner curved walls list those from Collin County who gave the ultimate sacrifice, with names sandblasted into the granite wall surface. Centered in the Wall of Honor is the continually lighted flagpole atop a substantial granite pedestal base, and a radial fountain basin featuring water jets.
Low-walls, in both straight and radial configurations, make up the southwest approach to the Wall of Honor. Copings of radial-cut cubic Lueders Limestone clad the top of the cast-in-place low walls, with vertical veneer being random size modules of Lueders Limestone in sawn and split finishes.
The project was completed on time for its long-planned opening ceremony of Veteran’s Day 2011. A tally of materials totaled over 5,000 square feet of finished stonework.
Date of Project Completion: November 2011
