Project Description
The Lenoir-Rhyne Chapel was built in the center of the Lenoir-Rhyne University Campus in Hickory, NC, and has become a focal point for the visitors of this university. The Architect designed this project with interior concrete masonry walls and clay brick exterior veneer with precast accents. The CMU walls consist of Architectural Split Face, Polished Face and Shot Blast Masonry Units. All three CMU textures were manufactured with the same mix design to allow the CMU to have the same base color and exposed aggregates. The different textures of the CMU allowed the Architect to accent the walls while using the same masonry wall system. The CMU were made with a brown aggregate that complements the wood trim used throughout the building. The CMU walls were apart structure for the building and were also the finish interior walls, which eliminated the need for other finishes like paint, gypsum board, and etc... These CMU walls are extremely durable and will greatly reduce the need for maintenance such as painting, patching and etc... The CMU easily met the fire ratings needed to meet all local building codes and provide a safe environment for all the guests of this facility. It is evident that the masons took pride in their workmanship, and it is exciting to see this quality of work on a commercial project. The Chapel has drawn so many admirers that the University has hired students to show people around the facility.
