Mortarless Wedge Block System Gets Southern Building Code Congress O.K.
Wedge Block, Inc. of St. Louis, Missouri has announced Southern Building Code approval of its mortarless concrete block construction system. The Committee on Compliance issued its approval report #7137 opening the way to sales of Wedge Block in those states where building is governed by the Southern Building Code Congress.
Wedge Block is designed around the ancient keystone principle, noted for its strength in the many mortarless structures of ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt. With its double-vee grooves interlocking with all adjoining blocks, horizontal and vertical alignment is quick and easy. Its major advantage is the elimination of mortar which makes for faster construction at reduced labor costs.
In recent time studies made on an actual construction site and using union bricklayers, a savings of over 66%

promise a test of the rules, which allow a 20% faster write-off on plant and equipment purchases and eliminate the complex reserve ratio test.
The complainants claim that the Treasury does not have legal authority to rewrite the depreciation regulations. They are arguing that only the Congress has the necessary power.
Treasury officials are telling businessmen there is little reason not to use the new faster write-off rules. They say it is doubtful that the courts would strike down the rules.

per square foot was realized in labor costs. In a second project, the masonry contractor who had built the time study wall bid $600.00 for the labor to build a vacation cottage. Having had prior experience, his bid was 50% lower than the next bidder. The masonry portion was completed in two days, using a three-man crew at a cost of just under $400.00, leaving an additional profit for the contractor of 33% on the job.
To the block manufacturer, the Wedge Block system has still other advantages. Their size, 8" X 6" X 12", makes estimating easy. Two Wedge Blocks make up a square foot of wall. This means increased volume of nearly 40% in a given project. Because construction skill is built in, he can also charge more per block. The speed of installation more than offsets the increased material cost, as was the case in the vacation cottage where the customer realized an overall savings of 33% on the masonry portion of the building.
