TRACTOR-FORKLIFT
One of the two industrial tractors exhibited by International Harvester Company at the Mason Contractors Association of America 1964 convention was the newly introduced International 4421 tractor-forklift an integral, self-propelled unit that had not previously been exhibited anywhere. The 4421 is one of a line of ten new model tractor-forklifts just announced by IH. Life capacities range from 2,500 to 6,000 pounds, with full lift heights of 10%, 12, 14 and 2114-feet, with the various models. International is offering three "4000 series" models. Seven models are offered in the 5000 series. Equipped with hydrostatis power power steering (standard on all models) these tractor-forklifts are high steering performance units. The company expects the new line to be used on construction sites and other locations where unfavorable weather or terrain prohibit conventional fork-lift truck operations. The 4491 on display at the exhibit simulated a construction site, with the tractor forklift shown hefting a full pallet-load of brick at full height. The second industrial tractor shown at the International Harvester exhibit also simulated an outdoor construction site situation. On International model 100 Cub Cadet was displayed on crushed stone to illustration an effective means of leveling crushed rock inside certain masonry forms The 10 HP unit was equipped with a rear mounted backfill blade.
TEST REPORT
The Research and Development Department of AA Wire Products Company has announced that they have just completed a study at the Illinois Institute of Technology Research Center in Chicago on cavity wall reinforcing systems. The research effort was directed toward the development of a wire tie which would develop shear resistance between two wythes of a masonry cavity wall. A practical tie which can achieve this and still be used with the modular 3/8 in. mortar joint is not currently available. Laboratory experiments consisted of preliminary testing of various wire designs for shear and compression resistance. In these experiments, the X tic, flush welded in the center of the cavity, was more than twice as strong, both in shear and compression, as two diagonal trusses intersecting in the center of the cavity without a weld. Further tests were conducted on full size four foot by eight foot (4 ft. x 8 ft.) masonry panels of cavity wall design when lateral loading was in the vertical span, and twelve foot times four foot panels (12 ft. x 4 ft.) when lateral loading was in the horizontal span. The wall panels were of 4 in. concrete block backup, a two inch air space, and a four inch brick facing. The ties were the new AA-Lok which consist of two (2) continuous 3/16 in. reinforcing wires designed to restrain shrinkage in both face shells of the backup and to provide double reinforcement to the back up block, and a continuous 3/16 in. wire designed to be embedded one inch from the outside face of the brick facing. The three reinforcing wires are joined by the new X design with the AA Wire Products Company flush weld forming a homogeneous reinfore ing tie. Other cavity wall ties used in the study were the conventional 3/16 in. Z-Bar and AA Wire Products Company Econo-Cavity Lok. The new AA-Lok increased the strength of a 10 in. cavity wall loaded in the horizontal span by a factor of 1.80 over the same wall tied with the conventional Z-Bar. The new design placed both reinforcing wires in the block back up in direct tension and thus increased the load carrying capacity of the wall, with both 3/16 in. reinforcing wires in the backup in tension. The complete report on this study, Project IITRIB862-1 is available from AA Wire Products Company, 14 E. 61st St., Chicago 37, Illinois.
MONORAIL HOIST
Aeiroil Products Co. Inc. of South Hackensack, New Jersey announces the introduction of the all-new 1,000 lb. Monorail Hoist. This unique hoist can be set-up either on a scaffold or on a roof and will raise a thousand pounds of brick or masonry block to the working level, where it is then pulled in along the monorail and set on the scaffold without the operator leaning over the edge of the working area to pull the load into place. The M-1000 Monorail Hoist is available with a Masonry Fork attachment for handling pallets of brick or block. A free 8 page brochure describing the Monorail Hoist is available by writing to: Aeroil Products Company, Inc., 69 Wesley Street, South Hackensack, New Jersey.
DIAMOND BLADE
One of the feature exhibits at the Annual Meeting of The Mason Contractors Association of America was an actual demonstration of a metal bonded Diamond Blade, slicing through the hardest kinds of Concrete, Brick, Glazed Tile, Marble, Glass and other building materials. Identified as a TARGET Inter Lok Diamond Blade, manufactured by the Robert G. Evans Company, ansas City 10, Missouri, the Blade presents a perfectly smooth edge on casual examination, yet when used on a Masonry Saw or Wet cutting Power Hand Saw, it cuts through Masonry materials with astonishing ease and speed. While Diamond Blades have been in use through out the Construction Industry, they have heretofore been made with natural Diamond grit. The use of "Man-Made" Diamonds as now manufactured by The General Electric Company is a break that spells safety to our Defense industries and economy to Construction industries. With such optional equipme as scoop buckets, block for load safety racks, boom attac ments, grout hoppers, fork e tensions, overhead guards, sa shifters, plus many more, th YORK towable becomes the m versatile lift truck on the mark
