Masonry Institute of Tennessee - AIA Tennessee Awards

Words: Dan KamysWhat do you get when you combine Tennessee architects, great food and beautiful state gardens ambiance? You get another successful Awards Night cooperative venture between AIA Tennessee and the Masonry Institute of Tennessee (MIT).

This year's Excellence Award goes to Hefferlin + Kronenberg's private Hunting and Fishing Cabin. The cabin is located in a remote rural area of Tennessee on the Cumberland Plateau. The 20-year-old development was conceived to protect the natural environment and to capture the beauty of the area.

Stone was a natural choice as a material because it fit in with the mountain retreat design. Tennessee sandstone, installed by fifth-generation, local stonemasons, was used throughout the stonework. The base of the building, exterior retaining walls and a fire pit (all of which were stone) create outdoor spaces to enjoy the surroundings through all seasons. A screened porch, designed as an exterior dining room, also features a stone fireplace.
