At the base of Mont Ventoux in Vaison-la-Romaine, France, a new cultural center is turning heads for a straightforward reason: it leads with stone. Designed by Tectoniques, the building is set within a 55-by-55-meter square boundary built from locally sourced Vers-Pont-du-Gard stone, creating a strong perimeter that ties the project to its rural context while delivering the durability and thermal mass masonry is known for.
Within that stone enclosure, timber volumes shape the interior plan around a central courtyard that functions as a Mediterranean garden and sports field. The layout is organized into three equal zones, helping the center hold multiple programs without feeling chopped up. A gallery links a children’s activity center and performance hall on one side with a music and dance school on the other.
Several design moves stand out for builders tracking how architecture and performance meet. The performance hall sits under a half-cylinder roof. Dance spaces pull in daylight through two pyramid-shaped volumes.
