The City of Harrisburg says it has reached a $13,750,000 global settlement with Liberty Mutual that will help fund the reconstruction of the Broad Street Market, an iconic part of the city’s built environment.
City officials said the settlement is expected to cover the majority of rebuilding costs, alongside $2,250,000 from Pennsylvania’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program. Even with those funds, the city says it is still covering an estimated $7 million to $9 million.
The city says the Broad Street Market’s brick building is slated to reopen in the summer of 2027. The project follows a major fire that engulfed the historic brick building on North 3rd Street in the early morning hours of July 10, 2023. The city said the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction in a ceiling fan that was installed in 2017.
While work continues on the brick building, the market’s stone building remains open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. A tent structure erected after the fire is also operating, open Thursdays and Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
