A popular walking route in County Donegal is set for another round of construction, with Phase Three of the Muckish Railway Walk expected to get underway from Monday.
W Doherty Construction Ltd has been appointed for the work, which is being funded through the Outdoor Recreational Infrastructure Scheme. The project scope includes resurfacing the remaining 3.5 kilometers of the route, drainage improvements, new car parks, fencing, and seating.
For construction teams, that mix of trail surfacing and water management is straightforward on paper, but it can get complicated fast in the field. Drainage details have to match the ground conditions, and the work needs to hold up under heavy rain, foot traffic, and maintenance equipment over time.
The bridge scope is where masonry construction is clearly part of the story. One bridge is set to be replaced, and repair work is planned for three existing masonry arch bridges. Arch bridge repairs are typically about protecting the integrity of the arch and its mortar joints while improving serviceability for today’s use. That kind of work calls for careful staging, access planning, and protection of adjacent materials, especially when the surrounding project also involves drainage changes.
The section of the Muckish Railway Walk affected by the construction will be closed to the public for the duration of the works. Local Cllr Michael McClafferty has welcomed the developments.
