Whitewater Canal Historic Site Secures $14.4 Million For Preservation Project

Community members gathered at the Whitewater Canal State Historic Site in Metamora, Indiana, for a closer look at an upcoming preservation project that is now backed by $14.4 million in public investment.

The funding package includes an additional $7.4 million released in April by the Indiana State Budget Committee for repair and rehabilitation work at the historic site. That comes on top of a $7 million READI 2.0 matching grant commitment announced in January.

Site officials called the work a long-term effort to restore and preserve the Whitewater Canal for future generations, and they thanked the State of Indiana, the Southeastern Indiana Regional Economic Acceleration Development Initiative, and I Love Metamora, Inc. for supporting the project.

While a project start date has not been announced, the size of the investment is a reminder that preservation work is being funded, planned, and moved forward at the state level. For contractors who do repair and rehabilitation on historic sites, these announcements help signal where public owners are putting money into the built environment, and where future bid opportunities can follow as scopes and schedules are finalized.

The Whitewater Canal State Historic Site plans to share updates through its Facebook page as the project moves ahead.
