Esh Construction has completed a £1.3 million restoration of the 18th-century Abbeydale Dam at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet in Sheffield, a Scheduled Monument recognized as an internationally important industrial heritage site.
The work was commissioned in 2021 after significant leaks developed within the dam, allowing water to escape through the northeast corner and build pressure behind historic stonework. Temporary stabilization measures were put in place, but stakeholders determined a permanent fix was needed to protect both the dam and the surrounding site.
Michael Sherrard, construction manager at Esh Construction, said the project required a sensitive approach that paired modern engineering know-how with traditional conservation techniques. He also credited close coordination between Sheffield City Council, Sheffield Museums Trust, Historic England, design partners, and specialist supply chain teams for helping deliver the work while protecting the site’s heritage value.
For mason contractors and restoration crews, the scope reads like a familiar checklist of high-stakes heritage repair. The project included rebuilding and repointing displaced stone walls using traditional stonemasonry techniques, installing clay linings and waterproof membranes to reduce future leakage, and grouting voids to strengthen weakened areas.
Work also extended to repairs and underpinning at the hamlet forge walls in areas immediately adjacent to historic structures. The team installed a new concrete base, then rebuilt and repointed sections of the dam wall using traditional lime mortar, puddle clay, and a Bentonite membrane. Throughout the job, Esh worked with stakeholders to minimize disruption and keep the work aligned with the requirements that come with working on a Scheduled Monument.
Because of the site’s protected status, the restoration was carried out under Historic England guidance and approval, along with permits issued by the Environment Agency. The goal was to balance structural and water management needs with preservation of the landmark’s historic fabric so the restored dam can continue supporting the water-powered system that once drove the site’s industrial operations.
