Archaeologists have uncovered an 800-year-old section of a medieval castle wall hidden beneath Chester Crown Court, a find that puts real, load-bearing history right under a working public building.
Dr. Stewart Ainsworth spotted the discovery in a dark corridor, using a smartphone light to pick out an abrupt change in the masonry. Researchers later confirmed the wall’s medieval origin, and said it survived the 18th-century construction of the court complex.
The wall is substantial, rising nearly three metres high. Researchers described it as part of a bridge that crossed a deep ditch around the castle’s inner ward, a reminder of how large-scale masonry work shaped defensive sites long before modern infrastructure and security.
For mason contractors, the discovery is also a practical lesson from the field. On renovations, maintenance, or security upgrades in older civic buildings, hidden masonry can sit behind later finishes, inside basements, and along service corridors. When a wall shows a sudden change in units, mortar, or bond pattern, that change can signal a different construction era, or a significant structural element that needs a preservation plan before work moves forward.
Cheshire Constabulary PC Jonathan Lightfoot said the find highlights the importance of protecting historic fabric. “This just shows we can now safeguard this bit of history so we can learn from it for future generations,” he said.
