At the University of Virginia, the best masonry repair work is the kind you can’t spot. The school’s historic masons focus on conservation, using materials and methods that match the original construction so repairs blend into the brick, stone, and plaster already in place.
That “like-for-like” approach is on full display along the Lawn, where Thomas Jefferson’s Tuscan columns were built with handmade brick cores and a limestone render designed to let moisture escape. Over time, maintenance shifted to more modern patching, including Portland cement repairs and paint. UVA officials say those changes trapped moisture, which accelerated deterioration. In cold weather, that trapped water can freeze, creating small cracks that lead to more damage.
UVA’s preservation team has since returned to older techniques, replacing Portland cement with a lime-based render to help the columns “breathe.” This summer’s work includes repairs at Pavilion II, continuing a campus-wide push toward materials that better match the original assemblies.
For mason contractors working on restoration, the takeaway is straightforward: compatibility beats convenience. If the existing wall was designed around vapor-permeable lime mortars or renders, switching to harder, less permeable materials can change how the assembly handles water. Before you repoint or patch, confirm what’s in the wall, and make sure the repair material supports the same moisture movement the original builders counted on.
