Construction is accelerating on the Iten Affordable Housing Project in Kenya’s Elgeyo Marakwet County, and officials say the job has now reached a key milestone for the building trades, the masonry phase.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the KES 1.2 billion development is underway in Iten, a high-altitude training destination known internationally as the “Home of Champions.” The project is designed to deliver 228 modern housing units in four G+4 residential blocks, and updates from the site indicate the main concrete framework for the lower floors has been completed while exterior wall construction is in progress.
The housing push is tied to Iten’s growth as a global athletics hub. The town draws elite runners, international coaches, and sports professionals, and that demand has tightened the local rental market. Officials say the new housing is intended to support both local residents and the broader sports tourism economy, while adding infrastructure that reduces pressure on municipal services.
For mason contractors and masonry crews, a “masonry phase” headline usually means the schedule is about to hinge on day-to-day execution: wall layout, openings, access, staging, and keeping production moving as inspections and other trades stack up. Omollo also emphasized compliance oversight tied to structural integrity and financial transparency, which puts even more focus on quality control as walls rise.
The work is also being positioned as a local workforce driver. The project is employing hundreds of local artisans, masons, and laborers, and officials describe the site as a training ground where younger workers can build certified construction skills for Kenya’s real estate sector.
