What must be considered one of Memphis' most challenging architectural projects is taking shape at the northern extremity of Memphis State University. Completed are the initial two phases of the university's four-stage fine arts complex-the Speech and Drama Building and the Music Building. The remaining two parts, still in the planning stage, will add a building for Painting and Design and a Communications Center housing an educational TV station.
The complex, which will form a new gateway to the fast-growing educational center, was designed to meet a realistic budget, resulting in what the architects termed a "direct, positive approach." The buildings are not austere, nor are they fraught with frills. Much attention has been given to retention of many beautiful trees to capture all of the color and variety possible from the provisions of nature.
Connecting the present two buildings is a covered canopy, entrance plaza and 250-seat amphitheatre. The entire basic structure is reinforced concrete using a beam and joist system. Exterior materials are white architectural concrete, salmon-colored sand faced brick, and gray glass. Interior materials include brick in corridors and public areas, wood, plaster and painted concrete block.
The architectural firm of Gassner, Nathan & Browne won the first place award for outstanding design for this complex in architectural competition in Memphis. Gardner's Masonry Contractors, Inc. won third place in the 10th annual Masonry Execution Award contest.
