Arizona Masonry Guild Announces Architectural Award Winners

Words: Dan KamysThe 13th Annual Excellence in Masonry Architectural Awards program honored its award-winning homes and commercial buildings during a special banquet held at the Scottsdale Marriott Camelback Inn on Oct. 22, 2004. The program honored 11 projects for outstanding masonry design, workmanship and creativity with the use of brick, block or stone.

A total of 29 entries from throughout Arizona were submitted for this year's awards program. Entries were judged by a distinguished panel of architects, a mason contractor and a masonry supplier, all from Utah, including: Brent R. Tippets, AIA and Principal of VCBO Architects, Inc.; Solim Gasparik, AIA and Architect with VCBO Architects; Mark Hedman, Interstate Brick; Alan Johnson, IMS Masonry; and Fred L. Thalmann, AIA and Architect.

An award was presented to the architectural firm, mason contractor, structural engineering firm, general contractor and masonry supplier for each winning project.

The Annual Excellence in Masonry Architectural Awards program is sponsored by the Arizona Masonry Guild, Inc. Established in 1958, the non-profit organization is celebrating 46 years of service to both the masonry industry and Arizonians. The Guild has played a significant role in economic development, new product and construction standards, enhanced safety policies, and increased energy efficiency of masonry products. It has also been on the forefront of developing and implementing statewide consumer education campaigns and scholarship programs with Northern Arizona University, Arizona State University and the University of Arizona.
