"Village" Competition Will Spotlight Our Industry at Construct America

President’s Message

By

What structure, commonly found in a village, can you build with 732 bricks, 30 concrete masonry units, glass blocks and stone?

Take these materials, add a little imagination and a team of architects and mason contractors, and you have the "Masonry: It Makes A Village" design-build competition to be held during Masonry Showcase at Construct AmericaTM this April 19-22 in Chicago. This exciting two-day competition challenges mason contractors and architects from across the country to highlight masonry, its many uses, its flexibility and its creative potential to thousands of architects and specifiers who will attend this year's show.

This contest isn't only a new and exciting event for attendees to watch, but it will be an important event to the overall promotion and future growth of the masonry industry. Over 5,000 specifier and architect attendees will view the "Masonry: It Makes A Village" competition during two days of the Showcase. On the last day, those same specifier and architect attendees will have the opportunity to judge the "Best of Show" award.

I believe that the "Village" competition will spotlight our industry like few promotional efforts can. What will the impact be to our industry if those 5,000 architect and specifier attendees go home and think about designing their next project with masonry? What will the impact be to our industry if those 5,000 specifier and architect attendees ask the question "Why haven't we designed more of our projects with masonry?"

The "Village" competition is an opportunity for our customers to reconnect with masonry and its many features. It's our industry's opportunity to promote the many benefits of masonry. During a time when construction is not as robust as it has been, I for one am excited about the possibilities of showcasing the products and capabilities that masonry has to offer directly to our customers. This is a great opportunity to gain the attention of our customers during a three-day show ? something that no other trade show offers. Masonry Showcase will offer our industry's contractors the opportunity to learn what's new in masonry, and now it is an opportunity for our customers to revisit what's great about masonry.

This year, up to seven teams will compete in the "Masonry: It Makes A Village" contest held on the exhibit floor at McCormick Place. I urge you to come to Masonry Showcase and, as always, view the exhibits and attend the educational seminars. I also want you to cheer on those contractors who are participating in the "Village" competition and thank those architects who have teamed up with the mason contractors for their commitment to building with masonry.
