A First World War memorial at the center of Upperby Cemetery in Carlisle has been restored ahead of this year’s Remembrance Day commemorations.
The Upperby war memorial honors men from the area and surrounding parishes who fought and died during the 1914 to 1918 conflict. The monument is a granite obelisk topped with a carved draped urn, and it bears 24 inscribed names of local men who lost their lives.
Weather-related wear and tear on the structure prompted the restoration project, which was scheduled to wrap up before the annual commemorations. Specialist contractors completed the work earlier this year.
The scope of work reflects the real-world basics of memorial and monument preservation. Crews carried out a deep clean, repointed the masonry, resealed the joints, and repainted the lettering. That combination brings together surface cleaning, joint maintenance, and clear legibility, three details that define quality restoration work on stone memorials that stand outdoors year-round.
