Robots are moving from the lab to the jobsite, and brickwork is part of the story.
Monumental, a robotics company, says its autonomous bricklaying robots have built an apartment in Almere, in the Netherlands. The company released footage showing the robots working from curved scaffolding while laying brick at the site.
Monumental founder Salar al Khafaji said the project pushed beyond straight runs of brickwork. He said the robots laid a curved wall that included different brick types, different brick bonds, and even indented text formed in the brickwork.
The company also said its robots have started building an entire neighborhood in the Groningen area, including more than 100 houses and a hotel.
For mason contractors, the details mentioned in this project matter. Curved walls, multiple brick types, and specific bond patterns leave less room for guesswork. Whether a wall is laid by hand or with automation, the drawings, layout information, and material staging plan still need to be right to keep coursing, alignment, and aesthetics on track.
This kind of work also highlights where masonry expertise stays essential. Brick bonds, transitions between different units, and architectural elements like lettering all need clear intent, plus knowledgeable eyes verifying that the finished wall matches the design as it goes up.
