Shawano County Courthouse Project Moves Ahead As Masonry Bids Are Opened

SHAWANO COUNTY, Wis.

Bids are in for the Shawano County Courthouse project, marking a key step as the county moves from bidding into review and award planning.

Kurt Berner of The Samuels Group read the bids aloud, with contractors submitting proposals across several scopes. The bid categories included excavation, concrete, masonry, steel, detention equipment, elevators, heating and cooling systems, electrical work, and combined bid packages that bundle multiple trades.

Among the individual bids announced were $647,929 from H.M. Brandt for bid category two, $3.6 million from Millis Flatwork for concrete work, $4.49 million from Hanson Masonry and Concrete for masonry work, and $1.63 million from Sweeper Metal Fabricators for detention equipment. Other bids included $1.58 million from Otis Elevator Co., $295,000 from Masters Building Solutions for air-cooled water chillers, and $476,712 from Sargent Electric for electrical work.

Several contractors also offered combined bids. C.D. Smith Construction submitted a combined bid of about $13.47 million for concrete, masonry, and steel work. C.E. Doyle submitted combined bids of $12.57 million and $11.53 million covering several categories.

Berner said a finalized bid tabulation will be posted on the county’s website after the numbers are checked for accuracy. After that, the team will review and qualify each bid. He said that means meeting with contractors to confirm the scope is covered and complete, then identifying the lowest qualified bids. Recommendations are expected to go first to the county’s property committee and then to the full county board at the end of the month.

For mason contractors watching public work, the message is clear. A low number is not the only hurdle. Be ready to walk owners and construction managers through what is included, what is not, and how your scope aligns with the bid package, especially when work is bundled with concrete and steel.
