Repairs are underway on Waupley Bridge on the A171 near Scaling Dam reservoir after Redcar and Cleveland Council issued a £40,000 contract for structural improvements.
A council decision report says the bridge’s masonry stone-built parapets were damaged by vehicle collisions. The impacts led to the collapse of sections of masonry blockwork on both sides of the A171. A temporary 40 mph speed restriction remains in place to protect drivers, and temporary barriers have been installed.
The council awarded the work to Wilf Noble Construction & Plant Hire Ltd following a competitive procurement exercise. The contract term is three months beginning Sept. 1, and the council report says the award began last month.
For contractors, this type of parapet repair puts safety and sequencing first. The work has to fit alongside live traffic controls already in place, and the repair plan has to account for the bridge’s existing stonework and the damaged sections on both sides of the roadway. The council said the repairs will maintain the safety of the road, and it noted the contractor is based in North Yorkshire and will use a local workforce.
Waupley Bridge sits between Grinkle Lane and Dodder Carr Road, about 1 kilometer west of Scaling Dam reservoir.
