Corfe Castle Restoration Shows How Stonework Can Stand Up To A Changing Climate

A major conservation project at Corfe Castle in Dorset has been completed after three years of work and a £2 million investment, aimed at protecting the 11th century ruins from weather damage and the growing impacts of climate change.

The National Trust said the effort was the biggest at the landmark since the 1950s. Conservators repaired stonework, stabilized walls, and investigated a possible entrance believed to be linked to the castle’s fall during the English Civil War. They also carried out repairs to the keep, the central tower that once served as the heart of royal life at Corfe Castle.

The restoration underscores a challenge many preservation teams are facing on historic masonry sites. Hotter, drier summers can dry out mortar, and warmer, wetter winters can speed up vegetation growth that loosens stones. With parts of the rubble-filled walls left exposed after Parliamentarian forces partially demolished the castle in 1646, the ruins have been especially vulnerable.

To help protect exposed wall tops, conservators used “soft capping,” covering vulnerable areas with grass to reduce damage from drought, heavy rainfall, and invasive vegetation. That kind of detail matters because controlling moisture movement and plant growth can be as important as resetting stone when the goal is long-term stability.

Some of the toughest work centered on a fallen guard tower that sits at a 35 degree angle over a 30-meter-deep valley. The team built a bespoke lifting frame to remove and reset stones weighing up to 90 kilograms. Along the way, they uncovered stonemasons’ marks from medieval builders, including tally marks, guide marks around arrow slits, and axe strokes used to shape the stone.

The project also included a fundraising push, including a temporary “King’s View” platform that gave visitors rare access to the upper levels of the keep. Supporters raised £100,000 toward the final phase through the platform, donations, pin badge sales, and second-hand books. The National Trust said it will now move into a near-constant cycle of conservation work focused on maintaining repairs and managing vegetation growth.
