Arunachal Wraps Up Earthquake-Resistant Construction Training For Masons

A three-day training program on Earthquake-Resistant Construction Technology for masons concluded in Itanagar, with Arunachal Pradesh’s Department of Disaster Management leading the effort.

Held Aug. 25-27, the program focused on practical skills tied to safer construction in a high-risk seismic region. The course module, prepared by SID&P, PWD Itanagar, included fundamentals of earthquakes and resistant planning, foundation and masonry works, provisions for seismic bands and reinforcement, RCC detailing, identification of construction defects, retrofitting techniques, and safe practices at the jobsite. Participants also took part in hands-on demonstrations, quality checks, and a field visit to review earthquake-resistant features in existing structures.

The stated goal was to strengthen both technical knowledge and field execution, with an emphasis on quality workmanship, structural detailing, quality control, and safety. The training was inaugurated by Komkar Dulom, a retired secretary to the Government of Arunachal Pradesh and former director of disaster management. At the valedictory session, Nakap Nalo, MLA-cum-adviser to the minister for disaster management, congratulated the participants and stressed the need for pre-disaster preparedness, citing Arunachal Pradesh’s location in Seismic Zone V.

For masons and supervisors working in seismic areas, the topics highlighted in this training point to a simple jobsite reality: earthquake resistance lives in the details. Seismic bands, reinforcement placement, RCC detailing, and early defect identification all depend on crews following drawings closely, verifying work before it gets covered, and treating quality checks as part of production, not an afterthought.
