Business and property owners in Huntsville’s Choice Neighborhood Mill Creek project have a new opportunity to tackle long-delayed exterior upgrades, including masonry repair. The City of Huntsville approved a contract that brings Strozier Construction Company on as the project’s general contractor, clearing the way for grant-funded facade improvements.
The Mill Creek Facade Improvement Grant Program is funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant program. Eligible properties can receive support for projects with a maximum cost of $24,999. Property owners contribute 10% of the cost before construction starts, and the City covers the rest.
Eligible improvements include painting and surface cleaning, window, door, and framing repair, exterior lighting, signage, awnings, and canopies, masonry repair and siding, plus code and ADA accessibility upgrades. For mason contractors, this is the kind of work that can reward careful scope control, clear documentation of existing conditions, and close coordination with the general contractor so repairs stay aligned with the approved facade plan.
Applications are open to owners and operators of commercial or mixed-use buildings with ground-floor commercial space inside the Mill Creek boundaries, Holmes Avenue and I-565 south to Bob Wallace Avenue, between Triana Boulevard and Memorial Parkway. Property owners can apply online or email the City’s Community Development Department to start with a pre-application consultation.
