Construction calendars are filling up in Iowa City as the University of Iowa shared progress updates on seven campus projects that range from historic renovation to major new academic space.
For mason contractors and crews watching institutional work, the Iowa Advanced Technology Laboratories (IATL) addition is one to note. The university said construction is continuing on the addition, with masonry and structural work expected this fall. The project includes renovation of existing space and an added four-story wing with new classrooms, labs, offices, meeting spaces, and gathering areas for the Department of Computer Science. Interior renovation on the first and second floors is also moving ahead with HVAC, electrical, and drywall work, and the building’s entry renovation is expected to wrap up in September.
Across campus, the former art building, now named the Graduate College Building, is expected to be substantially complete in late November. The university is modernizing the building for new graduate programs while preserving much of its existing art deco architectural details. The building is expected to welcome faculty, staff, and students in spring 2027.
The Tippie College of Business expansion is also about to shift from planning to field activity. Groundbreaking is scheduled for Sept. 18. The university said the project will add an addition, renovate Gilmore Hall, and connect buildings with a new glass atrium. Work is planned in five continuous phases, and the final phase is expected to conclude in late summer 2028. In the near term, students, faculty, and staff should expect fencing, signage, materials, and equipment arriving at the site.
Other updates include continued modernization work at the Iowa Memorial Union, the Dance Building reaching substantial completion, Quad Green improvements targeted for mid-October completion, and a new Health Sciences Academic Building that is ready for use this fall.
