Stone Repointing Work Starts On Four Historic War Memorials In Derry And Strabane

Four historic war memorials in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area are set for major restoration and essential maintenance, with specialist contractors appointed to carry out the work.

Conservation specialists Irish Stone have been brought in to restore memorials at The Diamond in the city centre, as well as sites in Castlederg, Sion Mills, and Strabane. Consarc Conservation Architects are providing specialist conservation architecture services for the scheme to help ensure the work follows best-practice principles for the protection and preservation of historic monuments.

The council said the project is being supported by the Special EU Programmes Body through the PEACE Plus Programme. Alongside conservation work on the memorials themselves, the plan includes a cross-community outreach programme delivered by RAPID, North West Cultural Partnership, and Creggan Enterprises, engaging schools, local groups, and community organisations in discussions around shared heritage, remembrance, peace, and reconciliation.

From a built-environment and preservation standpoint, the work scope reads like a full conservation package: specialist stone repointing, specialist cleaning, conservation of bronze elements, painting, landscaping improvements, and enhanced accessibility measures. For contractors, it is also a reminder that heritage work rarely lives in one trade lane. Masonry repair needs to be coordinated with metal conservation, site improvements, and public access so the finished memorial is both protected and welcoming.

The works at The Diamond are also planned to align with wider City Deal public realm and lighting improvements in Derry city centre. The restoration programme is expected to take approximately three months, and work has commenced.
