The City of Phoenix Historic Preservation Office is accepting applications for the 2026-27 Exterior Rehabilitation Grant Program, a matching-funds program that supports exterior repairs on historic homes, including masonry restoration.
Phoenix City Council approved $200,000 from the General Fund for exterior rehabilitation grants, and additional funding is available through the city’s 2023 voter-approved General Obligation Bond. With two funding sources in place, the city is urging eligible homeowners to apply early.
The program provides 50/50 matching grants of up to $20,000 for approved exterior work. Eligible project types include roof repairs, masonry restoration, porch work, and reversing alterations that do not match a home’s historic character. To qualify, an applicant must own a home located in a city-designated historic district or a home individually listed on the City of Phoenix Historic Property Register.
For mason contractors, this program puts a spotlight on the value of getting the scope right and documenting existing conditions before work starts. Homeowners and contractors benefit from clear photos of existing walls and details, a written scope that stays on exterior work, and an estimate that separates tasks tied to masonry restoration, porch work, and other eligible items. On historic homes, the details matter, and the grant review process centers on work that fits the property’s historic character.
The Historic Preservation Office will host a virtual workshop on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2026, at 6 p.m., to cover requirements, eligible project types, and how to submit a complete application. Applications are due by Friday, Oct. 9, 2026, at 5 p.m.
