$1 Million In Maryland Preservation Grants Heads To 11 Historic Sites

Preservation work is getting a funding boost in Maryland, and that has direct implications for the trades that keep older buildings standing.

The Maryland Historical Trust announced it is awarding $1 million in grants through its Historic Preservation Grant Program for Fiscal 2026. Eleven historic properties around the state will receive support, including the Patterson Park Observatory and three landmark churches in the Baltimore area.

According to the agency, the program funds preservation-related acquisition and construction projects. It also supports professional services tied to construction project development, including architectural and engineering work, archaeology, and consulting services.

Demand outpaced the available dollars. The Maryland Historical Trust said it received 58 applications requesting more than $4.9 million. Individual awards range from $62,000 to $100,000.

For mason contractors and restoration crews, programs like this shape the near-term pipeline for rehabilitation work. Grant-funded scopes commonly come with detailed front-end documentation requirements and consultant involvement. That means estimating, scheduling, and submittals need to align with a preservation team’s expectations and the project’s approved scope.

Contractors who want to compete for this kind of work should watch for bid opportunities connected to grant recipients, confirm exactly which parts of the building are in-scope, and build time into the plan for coordination with architects, engineers, and other specialists listed in the project team.
