National Register Listing Puts Spotlight On 1890 Sandstone Cabin Restoration In Utah

The Jeremy Ranch Stone Cabin, a pioneer-era sandstone structure in Summit County, Utah, has been officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. The National Park Service listing took effect Aug. 3, marking the cabin as a protected landmark tied to the region’s agricultural past.

County officials say the cabin was built around 1890 on the original Jeremy Ranch and served as seasonal shelter for ranch hands managing large sheep herds in East Canyon. Built with locally sourced sandstone, it is described as the only surviving structure connected to Jeremy Ranch and a rare physical link to more than 70 years of sheep ranching history in the Snyderville Basin.

For mason contractors and restoration crews, the news is a reminder that small, rural structures can carry big preservation value. Summit County said it is working to restore the cabin and make it structurally sound. Because the cabin’s significance is tied to its original stone construction and workmanship, restoration planning puts the masonry front and center, from protecting existing stonework to keeping repairs aligned with the cabin’s historic character.

The path to the designation included a 2024 grant from the Utah State Historic Preservation Office that funded archaeological surveys across the 910 Ranch. According to the county, that work identified historic artifacts and buried subsurface anomalies that strengthened the nomination and highlighted the site’s archaeological importance.

Summit County also said the National Register listing opens the door to additional preservation grant opportunities, which it plans to pursue as part of its restoration strategy. Long term, the county hopes to fold the cabin into a future trail system so visitors can experience the ranch landscape, along with an interpretive sign already in place along East Canyon Road.
