Inside The Tudor Brick Conduit That Supplied Hampton Court Palace

Long before modern utilities, Hampton Court Palace needed a dependable supply of fresh water. Nearly 500 years ago, Henry VIII commissioned miles of pipework to bring spring water from nearby hills straight to the palace, with enough pressure, by the time it reached the bottom of the hill, to lift water up to the second floor.

One of the most substantial survivors from that Tudor system still stands in Kingston upon Thames, a short walk from New Malden station. The Coombe Conduit Head looks modest from the gate, then a solid brick structure comes into view. Step inside and the scale becomes clear. This is not a single room, it is a long subterranean passage that links two brick structures. The second structure remains, though it now stands largely as a ruin.

The building served more than engineering. It also housed the keeper tasked with maintaining and protecting the water supply. In an era when local water sources were polluted, clean spring water carried real value. Wealthier residents paid for a tap connection further down the hill, while others tried unofficial connections.

There is also a preservation story in the fabric of the site. The land once belonged to Merton Priory, and stone from the priory was later reused in construction of the conduit buildings. Inside, visitors can trace how spring water entered an upper tank, then flowed through a pipe to a lower settling tank where sediment dropped out before cleaner water continued toward the palace. A modern rooflight was added after a falling tree crashed through the structure above, a reminder that historic brickwork remains vulnerable to very current threats.

The conduit opens on the fourth weekend of the month from April to October, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Entry is free, and no booking is required. The address is Coombe Lane West, Kingston upon Thames, KT2 7HE, with access by local bus from Raynes Park or Norbiton stations, or on foot from New Malden.
