The Concrete Masonry Checkoff, an industry-funded program supporting innovation, education, and market growth, is helping push concrete masonry forward through efforts like the Beauty of Block campaign. A new Architectural Record essay brings that story down to street level in the Coachella Valley, where CMU has shaped everything from civic buildings to midcentury commercial work, and still anchors new desert homes.
The argument is simple and contractor-friendly. In extreme heat, exposed block and concrete slabs bring thermal mass that helps steady interior temperatures. The essay describes a home staying comfortable for hours during summer power outages, even as outdoor temperatures topped 108 degrees. CMU’s toughness also matters in arid climates where wind, sand, and sun punish delicate finishes.
The piece also ties performance to siting and restraint. It points to long-running passive strategies used in a mid-1940s desert house: limiting east and west solar exposure, placing the home in a microclimate created by irrigated crops and shade trees, using deep roof overhangs, building with concrete block walls and concrete floors for thermal mass, and placing glazing to balance daylight, views, and heat gain. In a 2009 residence, the architect used a mixed wood-frame and CMU envelope that went on to earn LEED Platinum.
For mason contractors, the takeaway is that design teams are not just specifying block, they are designing with it. The essay calls out white split-face units for texture and solar reflectivity, 6-inch-high courses for a tighter residential scale, sandblasted precision block for light and shadow, and curved CMU walls that shape the arrival sequence. When CMU is the finished surface, early coordination on layout, coursing, and the visual standard for exposed work moves from nice-to-have to job-critical.
