The Rhythms of Stone sculpture workshop

Words: DJ MartinelliThe sounds of autumn at Chicago Botanic Garden will once again carry the cadence of chisels upon stone as sculptor and author, DJ Garrity returns from Europe to conduct ‘The Rhythms Of Stone’, a long running and popular garden sculpture workshop.

Garrity is the former Sculptor-In-Residence of Mount Rushmore National Memorial currently living in Europe and dividing his time between France and the West of Ireland while working on a series of portraits in stone based upon Nobel Laureates.

Gardeners, artists and non-artists across America have enjoyed the opportunity to work with Garrity and to create heirloom garden sculpture from within the ancient patina and natural contours of stone. The artist encourages a light approach to the art of direct stone sculpture and the four-day workshop utilizes simple hand tools, as participants finesse their own unique garden sculpture from within Indiana limestone. No experience is required and the CBG workshop is the only 2012 program offered by Garrity in America.

For more information contact Beth Pinargote, Coordinator Symposia & Special Programs at the Chicago Botanical Garden 847-835-8278 or bpinargote@chicagobotanic.org and visit www.djgarrity.com. The fee for the workshop to be held October 11-14, 2012 is $720 nonmember; members receive 20% discount. Class size is limited to twelve participants.
