RMMI News & Events Words: Ann WolterThe inaugural Rocky Mountain Masonry Institute (RMMI) Sporting Clays event was a success in July. Approximately 75 people tested their skill and endured the 100-plus degree heat at Kiowa Creek Sporting Club. Tim Price of LPR Construction took top honors in the event with a score of 84. In addition to his trophy, he received a new Weatherby over & under shotgun, courtesy of shotgun sponsors A.P. Eberlein Company, Mortar Net, The Quikrete Companies and TXI. Representatives from Sportsman's Warehouse were on hand to do a background check and present the prize. The event raised more than $6,800 for masonry education programs. RMMI plans to use the funds to start new apprentice programs in high schools across Colorado. There have been a few staff changes at RMMI this summer. Nancy Snyder was named communications manager in June. Snyder, who has an extensive background in journalism and public relations, has served as an all-around office assistant since January. Also, Member Services Director Linda Riney resigned from RMMI in July, in order to spend more time with her family. This month, RMMI and the Rocky Mountain Cement Council are co-hosting a day-long regional sustainability conference at the Four Points by Sheraton in Denver on Wednesday, Sept. 27. The day-long "Earthblog: A Regional Sustainability Conference" is designed for companies within the industry that focus on using masonry for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) projects for sustainability. The target audience includes architects, engineers, developers and other decision-makers interested in sustainable development. In order to set the stage for the topic, Earthblog will kickoff with a keynote address: "What is Sustainability?" Breakout sessions will be offered in two industry tracks, one for masonry and the other for concrete. Topics will include LEED construction, the environmental impact of cement, the new brick, king size brick versus modular brick, loadbearing masonry and the Belmar development. This will be a lead-in to the national U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) Green Build conference, which will be held in Denver in November.
