A Chance Start in Frankfurt, Kentucky
Every career has a unique starting point, and for Sam Hoehner, it began in 1993 in Frankfort, Kentucky. During a hot and dusty summer, Sam found himself needing a job, and an opportunity presented itself at Lee Building Products. For $5 an hour, Sam began cleaning up their brickyard—a choice that would unknowingly set the stage for a lifelong career in the masonry industry.

Growing Pains and Early Lessons
Sam's introduction to the industry wasn't influenced by family ties but rather his own initiative and familiarity with the Lee family, who owned the company. What started as a way to earn some gas money evolved into a deep-seated respect for the industry and its people. Tenacity and work ethic were key components that kept him engaged, leading him to attend meetings and educational programs organized by the Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association (CMHA) as early as 12 years ago.

Climbing the Ladder: From Participant to Leader
Progressing from attendee to chair of the CMHA board wasn’t a straightforward journey, but Sam's story is a testament to the power of saying "yes" and committing oneself to growth. Involvement in various committees, especially the masonry committee, afforded him invaluable insights and experience in leadership roles.

Being vice-chair for two terms allowed Sam to witness the inner workings of the association—a peek behind the curtain that revealed the tight-knit relationships among the executive team and the collaborative spirit that drives the organization.

From Manual Labor to Management
Transitioning from hands-on tasks to office work, Sam eventually navigated through the financial sector of the masonry business. As a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), he brought a unique perspective to decision-making, allowing him to evaluate business moves with clarity and understanding.

Understanding the financial backbone of the masonry sector has enriched Sam’s expertise, enabling him to contribute effectively to Lee’s operations as well as the broader industry through the CMHA.

The Power of Relationships and Community
It's not just about bricks and mortar; it's about people. At the heart of CMHA meetings are relationships and networking opportunities—elements that Sam greatly values. Creating connections with movers and shakers in the industry and fostering a culture of sharing knowledge has been key to both his personal and professional growth.

Encouraging the Next Generation

Looking to the future, the CMHA meetings serve as a fertile ground where young professionals can grow and take on leadership roles. Sam emphasizes the importance of stepping out of comfort zones and engaging in activities like chairing committees and attending educational sessions. Such involvement not only strengthens individuals but also fortifies the entire sector.
