GEN NXT: Ian Work

From initial challenges as a newcomer to the rewarding experience of building structures, Ian Work’s story highlights the artistry and fulfillment found in masonry. Ian shares insights on what sets the masonry industry apart from others and encourages others to join this rewarding trade.

Ian’s journey into the masonry industry is a story of unexpected and newfound passions. Initially enrolled in a work release program, Ian was introduced to the trade by someone already involved in it. This led him to a training center where he signed up and eventually became part of a training program. This decision marked the beginning of his dedication to masonry.

MASONRY Magazine: How did you first get involved in the masonry industry?

Ian Work: To be honest with you, I was in a work release program, and there was somebody that was already in the trade that suggested it to me. So I went down to the training center there and signed up. And then from there I fell into a training program and then never looked back.



His original plan was to become a cement mason. However, a literal glimpse into the brick industry changed his trajectory. The architectural beauty of the craft appealed to him more than the prospect of spending his days kneeling on the ground. This pivotal moment ignited his interest in the artistry of masonry, setting the course for his future career.

MASONRY Magazine: What was that initial moment where you realized that you wanted to be a mason and get more involved in the industry?

Ian Work: Well, I was on my way to be a cement mason, actually. And because they’re right next to each other, I looked over into the bricklayer center and I saw some guy working on this brick arch and I was like “You know what that looks way cooler than being on my knees all the time”. It's the architectural part that really interested me.



Throughout his journey, Ian found immense satisfaction in his work. The rewarding nature of the laying brick has taught him self-belief, showing him that with hard work, almost anything is achievable.

MASONRY Magazine: What has been your favorite part about being a mason so far?

Ian Work: It's rewarding, and I feel like all the hard work pays off. Ever since I got into this trade, it kind of taught me that I was capable of doing almost anything.



Overcoming the initial challenges of fitting in as the new guy was made easier by his commitment to showing up and putting in the effort every day. This persistence helped him integrate seamlessly, establishing his place in the industry.

MASONRY Magazine: What challenges have you had to overcome to get where you are in your career?

Ian Work: Just like, being the new guy and trying to fit in. But you know, eventually, as long as you put in work and show up every day, you end up fitting right in with the rest of them.



What keeps Ian returning each day is the tangible outcome of his efforts. Each job is unique, and the knowledge that his work will stand for over a century offers a sense of fulfillment unmatched by other trades. Masonry allows Ian to take pride in the visible results of his labor at the end of each day.

MASONRY Magazine: What about the masonry industry keeps you coming back to it every single day?

Ian Work: It’s extremely rewarding, and every job's different. Sitting back and looking at what we do is really rewarding, and you know that it's going to last a hundred years or more. And it's not like a lot of the other trades where all your work gets covered up. I think that's what keeps me coming back is I get to sit back and look at my work at the end of the day.



Ian believes that the distinction between a good mason and a great one lies in foresight and preparation. While a good mason efficiently lays materials, a great mason anticipates future challenges and remains a step ahead, ensuring seamless project execution.

MASONRY Magazine: What would you say separates a good mason from a great mason?

Ian Work: Well, a good mason can lay a lot of material and do what he needs to do. But a great mason is always one step ahead. He's looking above and beyond and he's prepared for what's coming.



Looking to the future, Ian aspires to climb the ranks within his company, aiming for a foreman position where he can lead and contribute to the company's success.

MASONRY Magazine: What are your plans for the future of your career?

Ian Work: My plans are to keep working in this industry, and hopefully work my way up with the company I'm working for and become a foreman and help them run, work, and become more successful.


Ian is passionate about the industry and encourages those considering it to dive in. Despite its demanding nature, masonry is immensely rewarding and offers a supportive and enjoyable work environment.

MASONRY Magazine: What would you say to someone that is on the fence about joining the masonry industry?

Ian Work: Tell them to do it! Out of all the trades I've ever been a part of, it's one of the most rewarding trades to be a part of. It’s hard work but that pays off. It's good for you in a way. It’s a good environment, the guys are fun to work with.
