Words: Justin Stengel

On this episode of the MASONRY STRONG Podcast, Mason Hill joins the set to dive into his journey in the masonry industry. Where he started, how his passion grew, and where he sees the industry going.

Family Business Dynamics

Running a family business like Hill Masonry comes with its unique set of challenges and rewards. Mason admitted he's only known this style of business management, where seeing your family daily is an integral part.

Discovering The MCAA

Not only is Hill Masonry a family tradition, but Mason's affiliation with industry networks plays a substantial role. He reflects on his formal involvement with the MCAA starting in 2017.

Interestingly, he had been attending the World of Masonry events with his father long before realizing how accessible MCAA membership was—“We thought maybe you had to be invited.” Discovering the ease of joining the association was a game changer, providing an invaluable network of friends and mentors.

The Impact of MCAA

  • Networking Opportunities: The chance to connect with other masons and contractors.
  • Access to Resources: From bids to business strategies, access to industry insights.
  • Growth: Seeing MCAA expand, especially with events like Midyear, reflects the growing camaraderie and sharing of knowledge.
Evolution in Masonry

Mason describes the transformations he's witnessed in masonry. With digital advancements, from planning to execution, masonry today requires adapting to new tools and methods. This evolution not only shapes how projects are planned and executed but also significantly influences business operations.

From Racer to Dad

Outside masonry, Mason has had an interesting stint with racing. Growing up, he ventured from quarter midget cars as a child to mini sprints and later, sprint cars. Although he says he now just watches, racing remains a cherished part of his past. Today, as a father to children engaged in their own activities, Mason enjoys seeing them carve out their own paths.

Associations and Growth

Over the years, being part of associations such as the MCAA has been beneficial. Mason mentions the “non-listed perks,” emphasizing friendships and insights gleaned alongside structured learning at events and meetings. He vividly recalls his first Midyear meeting at Steamboat Springs in 2017 as a turning point, introducing him to committees and a closer role in industry events.

Personal Growth and Industry Impact

  • Generation Next Committee: A platform for young leaders in masonry.
  • Sharing Experience: Mason's role in mentoring and networking.
What Does Masonry Strong Mean To Mason

The concept of "Masonry Strong" carries profound significance. For Mason, it symbolizes not just the durable materials they work with but also the strength of community and industry camaraderie. From powerful products to resilient relationships, the ethos of strength permeates every aspect of masonry.
