Barger honored for contributions to ASTM International Cement Standards

Words: Catherine AdkinsonGregory S. Barger, technical center director at Ash Grove Cement Co., Overland Park, Kansas, has received the Bryant Mather Award from ASTM International Committee C01 on Cement. The committee honored Barger for his overall outstanding contributions to the development and continuing improvement of C01 standards and the advancement of knowledge related to portland and blended cements.

Barger, who joined ASTM in 1988, was named an honorary member of both C01 and C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates in 2009. A member at large on the C01 executive subcommittee, he has received several awards for his work, including the Award of Merit and title of fellow − ASTM’s highest honor for contributions to standards activities. Barger also serves on Committees C12 on Mortars and Grouts for Unit Masonry and C15 on Manufactured Masonry Units.

A graduate of Ohio State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in microbiology/chemistry, Barger started his career at Southwestern Portland Cement in Fairborn, Ohio, where he was an analyst, research chemist, and then corporate process chemist at their Victorville, California, location. He joined Ash Grove Cement Co. in 1990 as a research lab manager and assumed his current title in 1992.

Outside ASTM, Barger is a fellow of the American Concrete Institute, and a member of the American Ceramic Society — Cements Division and the Portland Cement Association. He holds two U.S. patents.
