The RHYTHMS OF STONE WORKSHOP 2014 — The Aran Islands, Ireland

Words: DJ MartinelliThe RHYTHMS OF STONE WORKSHOP will be held April 25, 26 and 27 at Áras Éanna, Arts and Heritage Centre located at Inis Oirr, The Aran Islands, Co. Galway, Ireland.

Former Sculptor-In-Residence DJ Garrity developed the RHYTHMS OF STONE WORKSHOP at Mount Rushmore National Memorial as an interpretive training program in collaboration with the National Park Service. The artist has subsequently conducted the accredited workshop at museums, botanic gardens and art associations across America.

The workshop is based on the artists book “The Rhythms Of Stone - The Essential Guide To Carving The Face In Stone”. Participants of the program develop the hand carving skills to create distinctive additions and unique signatures in stone for public or private construction, masonry and landscape design projects. No previous sculpture, stone carving or artistic background is required.

Garrity currently divides his time between France and the West of Ireland and prior to his move to Europe in 2011 the workshop was an accredited and well-received program within the masonry and landscaping communities of California and Oregon.

Áras Éanna is a multifaceted Arts and Heritage Centre housed in a renovated weaving factory on Inis Oírr Island in the Aran Islands. Since its foundation in the year 2000, Áras Éanna has played host to some of Ireland’s leading visual and conceptual artists, musicians, performers and actors.

The workshop fee is €200 and includes materials and use of hand tools for the workshop. The travel arrangements and accommodations are the responsibility of individual participants. The Art Centre has excellent catering facilities close at hand for lunch and a list of hotel, B&B or camping facilities can be obtained by contacting Áras Éanna.

Garrity conducted just two workshops in 2013 and both sold out early. Reservations are advised. For more information on the artist visit www.djgarrity.com and to book a workshop reservation contact:
