Clemson U. to Research Metal Stud Systems

Clemson University has been awarded a research project cosponsored by the Brick Institute of America and the Metal Lath/Steel Framing Association. The research includes experimental and theoretical evaluation of the response of the brick veneer/metal stud system to lateral loads and wind-driven rain.

A computer model will be developed concurrently with the experimental phase that will predict the interaction of the brick veneer and steel stud system. The model will include such effects as tie stiffness, steel stud boundary conditions, brick veneer boundary conditions, and degree of composite action between the steel and the gypsum sheathing.

Flintkote Cement Adopts Genstar Name

In a move to identify its association with Genstar Corp., the San Francisco-based Flintkote Cement & Lime Co. is adopting the Genstar name. Affected by this name change are the firm's three operating units: Calaveras Cement Division, Flintkote Lime Division and Western Stone Products. They will now be under the umbrella title Genstar Cement & Lime Co.

Ted Gabrielson, personnel & safety manager of Genstar Cement & Lime Co.'s Redding, Calif., cement plant, holds limestone and shale-essential minerals used to make cement. Gabrielson is standing inside the plant's new raw material pre-blending dome, which was purchased from Domes, Inc. of Hayward, Calif. The pre-blending system was designed by PHB of West Germany. Genstar's plant rehabilitation was dedicated in May and is now producing 600,000 tons per year-more than twice its previous out put of Calaveras brand Portland cement.
