The Basics of Rigging and Signaling

This session will benefit workers in the field of concrete construction/masonry that use cranes and other equipment for rigging. Discussions will include the new OSHA standards regarding the use of riggers, signalers and crane operators. Case studies will show how pre-planning is an important step to set up pre-lift meetings when rigging. Reviewing several types of rigging equipment and procedures for inspecting rigging equipment will be addressed. The presentation will identify signaling requirements and procedures for establishing voice command and the proper use of hand signals associated with the type of crane in use. The importance of a rescue plan and emergency action plan will also be examined.

1. Recognize the role of the rigger and signaler and understand their safety sensitive positions
2. Name the different types of hitches for rigging
3. Understand the need for load calculations and sling angles
4. Discuss the importance and reality of pre-lift planning
