Design Build and the Use of Masonry: Opportunities and Industry Perceptions

Provider: Mason Contractors Association of California, Inc.
Discipline: General
Credits: 1.00

The use of concrete masonry as either a primary or secondary building structural element is familiar to most engineers and is commonly explored on commercial and institutional projects.  As opposed to other systems, it offers many advantages primarily where schedule, durability, aesthetics or security are key considerations.  Amongst design-build teams and particularly on large correctional projects, however, the use of masonry is often dismissed and replaced by precast modular construction or tilt-up construction due to factors such as perceived cost or concerns with the overall finished quality.  For this presentation, Colin Blaney will offer his observations as the SEOR on the pluses and minuses of concrete masonry construction and will also share with the group the feedback he has received from other design-build partners and well as some of the opportunities that the masonry industry should explore and market.
