Salt Lake City holds the 2014 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500® Utah Regional competition
Scott Tuttle to compete in the 2015 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500®
The 2014 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500® Regional Competition for Utah was held at Buehner Block Company in Salt Lake City, UT on August 22nd. Seven teams of brick masons and tenders vied for a competition spot in the 2015 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 National competition held in Las Vegas, Nevada. There, they will compete for over $100,000 in cash and prizes including a new 2014 Ford F-250 XLT truck.
Scott Tuttle, a mason with Quik Trowell Masonry, Clearfield, UT, and his mason tender Emmanual Alvarado, edged out the rest of the competition to take home first place. His net count of 661 brick got the job done. Not only did first place carry the opportunity to compete in the 2015 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 in Las Vegas for Scott, but it also came with $700 cash, trowels and a bag from Marshalltown and a Smith level donated by Interstate Brick. Tuttle also captured the SPEC MIX TOP PRAFTSMAN Award of $350 and and tools from Marshalltown as well as another Smith Level. The second place prize of $350 went to the other Tuttle (Brian), also from Quik Trowell Masonry. Brian Tuttle’s 550 net brick held off 3rd place finisher, Trint Pierce of Pierce Masonry who took bronze with 462 net brick. All bricklayers and tenders received cash and prizes for their participation.
The SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 Utah Regional switched gears in 2014 and landed at the host property of Buehner Block, a premier Concrete Masonry Unit Manufacturer in Utah as well as a SPEC MIX distributor. The event sponsors included Buehner Block, Interstate Brick who supplied CMU’s and brick respectively for the event. Cash donations and prizes were supplied locally by: Amcor Block, Beehive Brick, Brick Design, Hohman & Barnard and Lehi Block. Supplies such as use of a telehandler and plank were donated by Harv and Higgam Masonry.
National Sponsors iQ Power Tools set up equipment to demonstrate their latest in masonry cutting and dust collection equipment, while Multiquip sent mixers and mortar tubs to accommodate the 15 tons of SPEC MIX Portland Lime Sand Type N used by the Bricklayers in 1 hour.
Food was barbequed for all attendees and Red Bull was out to hand deliver beverages to all the fans and bricklayers. An ice cream truck even pulled in to feed the crowd dessert. “Bumble” the Salt Lake City Bees mascot came out to entertain fans, young and old. Bumble helped with the audience games such as bean bag toss and a heads/tails game where Hundreds of dollars in cash and prizes were won, including a high definition big screen television.
